Surveillance systems for commercial applications are first of all a visual deterrent. When there are CCTV cameras installed visibly, people will not usually park or go where they shouldn´t. It prevents theft and vandalism. In commercial areas such as a bank, for example, that is the main purpose of a CCTV system. If, however, they fail to act as a deterrent, then the recorded video of the event may be enough to make a positive identification or accurate description to law enforcement officers. On the other hand, when law enforcement makes an arrest the video usually holds up in court as evidence.
